CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Jemma-Lynn arrived at the travellers’ Steigenberger Nile Palace Hotel just after five o’clock on that same day, having paid four times the price of a normal ticket to secure her place on the next flight to Luxor. By then, both Ben and Michelle had already made the decision to leave the country, and were in fact long gone.
“We don’t think it is safe to remain. It is time for us to go.”
Rowan was furious with them both.
“Wait at least until Alex gets back!” she exclaimed.
Michelle burst into tears again at her reaction. All Ben said was that they were sorry, but they did not believe there was any reason to wait. Rowan received the very strong, and definite impression that he thought she was deluded. It was obvious he was feeling sorry for her, but not in a very nice way. All of a sudden, she began to really dislike the man that she had come to consider a friend.
Michelle had given both her and Judah a heartfelt hug.
“Good luck. Please stay safe, both of you.”
And that had been pretty much the extent of the couple’s goodbyes. They threw their bags in a taxi, jumped in the back, and sped off toward the airport without even a single glance back. After checking that it would be okay with Rowan, her Italian friend decided to go find out what was happening in the streets. He was a professional journalist after all, and this was what he was trained to do. To his credit, he had patiently waited with the other guys for a while, and she knew that he would stay with her as well if she asked him to, but she could tell he was dying to go.
“You go on. And be careful,” she urged him. “I’ll see you later.”
She went to wait in her room, since the lobby was too crowded. She was feeling restless, and panicked, and in no mood for casual company. She knew deep inside her heart that Alex and the girls had to have been seriously injured in the explosion. Alex would not have stayed away if not. She would have known how worried everyone would be, and she would have found a way to get in touch. Her silence could only mean bad news, and the longer she had to wait, the more worried Rowan became.
She had the TV on loud when Jemma-Lynn knocked on her door, and for a wild crazy second she allowed herself to believe that it would be Alex. In her haste to get to the door she tripped over her suitcase, and almost fell. Her heart was beating out of her chest.
“Rowan,” Jemma-Lynn greeted her, as soon as she opened the door.
When Rowan nodded, looking like she was about to burst into tears, the woman immediately pulled her against her chest, and enfolded her in a tight embrace.
“Don’t worry, everything is going to be fine,” she declared.
She walked into Rowan’s non-smoking room, dropped her bag on the floor, and immediately lit a cigarette, without even asking for permission.
